Duke Learns His First Service Dog Task
// December 3rd, 2009 // No Comments » // Duke's Diary
I was doing laundry yesterday and decided that now Duke knows his basic guide work (left, right, halt, steady etc.) it is time to start teaching him service dog work. I thought I would start off by teaching him something simple. How to shut drawers. This task can be used to shut drawers and doors of any kind once he learns it. I can come in handy and teaches him something that is pretty basic to get him use to learning to do tasks…
Another Proud Dukie Moment
// November 29th, 2009 // No Comments » // Duke's Diary
I haven’t taught him to do this yet. He just did it himself! He was quite proud of himself for what he did and he got a piece of chicken skin from my dinner as a reward. He especially liked the trade off I think! A piece of chicken for a piece of paper! The chicken was a lot more appetizing I bet…
So Proud of Duke
// November 28th, 2009 // No Comments » // Duke's Diary
We were getting near the end of our shopping trip and he had been on his best behavior, concentrating on his work and staying close as we made our way through the crowds and employees as they re-stocked the shelves. As we turned the corner at the end of an aisle a man dropped a container of cookies and they went all over the floor very close to Duke…
Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies
// November 27th, 2009 // 4 Comments » // Cooking with Kim
I found a new recipe for chewy chocolate chip cookies and thought I would try it out yesterday. I got all of the ingredients together, melted the butter and turned on the oven to pre-heat. Nothing happened! I made sure the switch was turned on and still nothing…
Test Night at Dog Club
// November 26th, 2009 // No Comments » // Duke's Diary
I can see how much Duke is improving each week. The first time I took him I didn’t so much take him into the room as he took me. In fact he dragged me into the room leaping at other dogs and growling at the little ones! At that moment all I could think was if only Cesar Millan was here! Of course he wasn’t, so I had to take matters into my own hands and deal with the situation…
A Short Lesson on the Term “Quadriplegic”
// November 24th, 2009 // 2 Comments » // Bits & Bobs
In reality spinal cord injuries are not that simple. A spinal cord can happen at any area of the spinal cord and every spinal injury is different. In fact if two people have an injury in the exact same place the likelihood of both people having the exact same results is very slim to nil.
The fact is the term quadriplegic simply means impairment in all four limbs…
Wheelchair Bowling
// November 23rd, 2009 // No Comments » // Sports, Video
We’ve gone bowling quite a bit since then and my score is steadily improving. Getting my own bowling ball helped because the finger holes were drilled so the ball fit snugly on my hand and the holes are in the right position to allow me to hold the ball. It’s a bit like having my own built in ball protector because other people try to hold it and get confused! They seem to not notice my name engraved right next to the finger holes…
